HIV/AIDS NGO Capacity Building Project Completed

The project "HIV/AIDS NGO Capacity Building in Belarus" (October 2005 - September 2008) was aimed at reducing the transmission of HIV within the country by strengthening the capacity of Belarusian NGOs to deliver effective HIV/AIDS services that target high-risk populations, as well as educate the general public.
The project targeted over 100 NGOs and community groups in all regions of Belarus and sought to enhance their organizational and managerial capacity, service provision, networking and inter-sectoral partnership.
Specific project activities included workshops and seminars, experience exchange visits and best practices presentations, a micro-grant program, publication of an information bulletin.
Accomplishments:
- Over 100 Belarusian NGOs involved in the developmental project activities.
- Over 100 workshops on HIV/AIDS and 43 workshops on organizational development conducted. Over 70% of NGOs which participated in the training activities reported significant improvements in their management, service provision and networking capacity.
- With the support of the micro grants program 18 projects were implemented by NGOs in 19 regions of Belarus most affected by HIV epidemic. As a result, 58 prevention services were created and over 25,000 of vulnerable population (youth, women, people living with HIV, injecting drug users, men having sex with men) were directly served.
- National HIV/AIDS Trainers Team was created. The team consisting of 13 trainers representing the leading AIDS-service NGOs conducts trainings, seminars, and professional development activities for NGOs, state institutions and international organizations.
- The capacity the Association "Belarusian AIDS Network" was strengthened to enable it to effectively represent, advocate for, and promote the opinions and interests of Belarusian AIDS service NGOs.
- 7 experience exchange events conducted - visits to Belarusian NGOs and study tours to partner NGOs in Kiev (Ukraine), Vilnius (Lithuania) and St. Petersburg (Russia).
- 6 issues of the information bulletin Vmeste! (Together) published.
- The project sponsored two unique national forums on HIV/AIDS - First National HIV/AIDS Trainers Forum (May 2008) and First National Forum of AIDS-Service Organizations (September 2008).
